Visiting Haystack Rock on Oregon's Cannon Beach might have been the highlight of my summer 2017 road trip up into the Pacific Northwest, and any number of shots from that day would have worked for a collection like this. But the one that stuck with me the most was this long exposure I took of the beach just after sunset as a number of campfires sprung to life in the mist.
For the better part of 2017, the Bountiful LDS Temple was missing its head, thanks to water damage that finally inspired the construction of a new spire. The daily sight of the temple topped in scaffolding evoked memories of when the temple was first built back in the early '90s, but it also seemed to symbolize a present period of reconstruction in my personal life. In that light, it was reassuring to know that everything that usually happens in the temple was still happening in the temple, and that the construction was only temporary.
I didn't pick up my camera in 2018 until setting out for my Spring Break road trip in March. After doing a little casual shooting at my first stop in Arches National Park, I lit out for a new destination: Corona Arch. I was all by myself when I first arrived at the famous arch, which actually rests outside of Arches, but after a few contemplative minutes, another hiker arrived and promptly gave me the simple perspective that really makes this shot.
