In October of 2017, only a few weeks after a gunman killed 58 people from a suite high up in the Mandalay Bay Hotel, a friend's Facebook post inspired me to head south for my Fall Break and visit the memorial that had sprung up around the Welcome to Las Vegas sign at the south end of The Strip. On a quiet Sunday morning, just before heading home at the end of the weekend, I pulled into a parking space and joined dozens of visitors, taking in the numerous signs, candles, flags, and various memorials that created a vibe I've never encountered in Sin City.
