For most of my power lunch portraits, the story was the subject itself, the friend or family member I was capturing for posterity. But in April of 2019, my portrait of longtime friend Randy came with some memorable context. By the time I took his photograph in a Cheyenne restaurant, we had been on the road for more than two days, returning from the NRA convention where Randy had been selling waterproof backpacks for three more days. Our intention had been to finish the journey home that day, but as we drove north from Denver to Cheyenne, we were greeted with a whiteout blizzard that threatened to extend our trip a final night. At the end of such a long journey and so close to home, the prospect of a final delay inspired the million mile look in Randy's eyes. Luckily, the storm broke by the end of our meal, and we were both home safe by that night.
