My old boss at KJZZ used to say that the Utah Jazz were one of the few things that could truly bring people together in the Beehive State, and as contentious as 2017 was, the August eclipse seemed to do the same thing for practically the whole country. We were far from totality at my sister's place in Kaysville, but we still had a good time getting together with the neighbors, and as usual, the pictures of people enjoying the thing were as good or better than the thing itself.
For the better part of 2017, the Bountiful LDS Temple was missing its head, thanks to water damage that finally inspired the construction of a new spire. The daily sight of the temple topped in scaffolding evoked memories of when the temple was first built back in the early '90s, but it also seemed to symbolize a present period of reconstruction in my personal life. In that light, it was reassuring to know that everything that usually happens in the temple was still happening in the temple, and that the construction was only temporary.
